Project Summary

Over the course of a college semester, each student was tasked with developing the concept, strategy, and a high-fidelity prototype of a new interactive media product.

My project is, FUNDamental: a mobile application that offers a welcoming and motivating digital learning environment to educate Canadian teenagers and young adults about financial literacy.

Financial literacy is a complicated and intimidating topic that cannot be learned in one sitting, or in one day. Therefore, this platform offers resources in various learning styles and formats to provide a rewarding and personalized experience for each user, and focuses on interactivity and gamification to encourage users to return to the app and continue their learning.

PROBLEM IDENTIFICATION

01

Many parents of people born in Generation Z (roughly between 1995-2010) lack the discipline or knowledge on how to build a financially educated household, and personal finance is not part of the mandatory Canadian curriculum

02

With the convenience of online shopping, the influence of social media culture and rapidly changing trends, it is easy to mindlessly buy things and engage in irresponsible spending habits

03

Various studies have shown a very close correlation between financial health and mental health.

04

Considering the current economy, Generation Z will not be able to buy a home or support themselves as easily as their parents generations could

How might we create an interactive media product that educates Canadian teenagers and young adults about financial literacy in an engaging, gamified way, to ensure they are interested in continuously learning about the topic and preparing for their futures?

USER BENEFITS

01

In the onboarding process, users can specify their learning goals and preferred learning styles to get a personalized experience throughout the entire app.

03

With the downloadable option in the library, users have the option to learn offline if Internet is unavailable. This is great for students who may be commuting throughout their days.

02

By continuing to return to the platform, users will improve their financial literacy over time, and be more prepared for the future.

04

The simulation game provides a realistic glimpse at the users future, but in a risk-free setting. What happens in the game does not actually affect the users bank account or future plans. It benefits them by making them aware of financial processes, and teaches them how to support their desired lifestyle based on their future income.
